red abakan
Magdalena Abakanowicz,
Red Abakan, 1969
Sisal and mixed media
Re-installed in ‘Wack! Art and the
Feminist Revolution’
Abakanowicz’s Abakans are preoccupid with the body’s hidden interior. The Red Abakan include orifices, labia like
folds and dark enclosures. Their sexual allusions are hightend by the bold pigments of the fiber, which ad enery and power. The
woven material can move, the viewer can move through vertical slits and opening to pass from one to another in the life-like interiors.
