Walking around Practical Magic, you become mesmerized by the forms, the woven threads, the patterns emerging that have both a graphic image and a material presence. The hand-dyed floor pieces have the graphic sense of a spider’s web shifting in the wind, their configuration creating images of both positive and negative space. The series of coiled ceramic totems recall flower forms while resembling the bodily interior, and some contain small cavities filled with sands, spices, corporeal matter, or nothing at all. Fraught with associations, they stand like monuments to grave ideas and imply the conduction of a mystical force.
