In this performative installation, ritual, language and passion are linked to Levi Strauss’ Tristes Tropiques. Sought after are transformative moments that are explored in the area called Torrid Zone: a moment of passion and a state of verve in which all senses are engaged, but where loss is attended. Central to this installation is the large sculpture Covert Entwined Heart. In Tristes Tropiques,Levi Strauss describes his sensorial impressions of his first encounter with the tropics in Brazil, and his returning travels lament the ‘lost’ New World and its native culture.
