On the Beagle voyage (1831-1836) Charles Darwin collected thousands of animal, plant, and geological specimens which he sent home in crates for futher study. Puzzeled by the geographical distribution of his findings, he began detailed investigations and in 1838 conceived his theory of natural selection.
